iPhone 2.0 is here

July 13th, 2008

My iPhone 2.0I got mine, along with the rest of the iPhone universe, on Friday. Note that I didn’t run out and purchase the iPhone 3G; I merely installed the iPhone 2.0 software update, which is tantamount to getting a whole new phone. Frankly, I’m not sure what benefits the 3G would bring me, apart from the occasional faster browsing away from the house or office. I’m usually within range of WiFi, and that’s faster than 3G anyway. And I suppose GPS navigation would be handy, but I already have a GPS unit in my Jeep, and it works just fine. The best thing about the 2.0 update is, however, the applications.

First, a warning: there’s a free game called iMaze available; not only is it a bad game, it actually caused my phone to reboot every time I used it until I deleted it. Avoid that one like the plague.

Second, here’s my favorite apps: eReader is an eBook reader that’s been around for at least eight years; I used to run this on my Palm handheld when I was working in Canada in 2001. Traveling back and forth between Victoria, BC, and San Jose, it was much easier to carry 20 books on my Palm than 2-3 in my luggage. I’m very gratified to have this application back and running on the iPhone.

MLB.com “At Bat” is great; it let’s me keep up with the latest scores and videos from Major League Baseball. I use it all the time.

NetNewsWire syncs my RSS feeds with the same app on my Mac. What’s not to like? The navigation is a bit funky (it’s hard to go to a specific feed if you want to read it—takes at least five clicks), but it’s very easy just to hit the “Next Unread” button.

And last, but definitely not least, is Phone Saber. You’ve gotta try it.
